And those highs and lows, those swings, it’s not just the bloods that you worry about, it’s mentally too because they, you know, she feels low, she can’t go and play, she can’t, and then when she’s high, she’s still can’t go play. She can’t go swimming, she can’t concentrate and she gets frustrated with herself. So it really upsets me when I see these bloods because I know from a mum side of things what those little children are going through or anybody with type one, watching them go from a high to a low to a high.
Did it support my goals, did it not support my goals? And so looking at things through that lens. But I really do want to say like a little internal discomfort is not always a bad thing. That internal feeling of like, oh, I did something that I didn’t mean to do. I don’t think you want to completely squash that feeling that things went wonky because when you start every time you make a mistake or you do something that didn’t support your goals, if every single time you’re like, that’s okay, everyone does it, it’s fine. Don’t worry about it. There can be a way that you won’t grow and it’s all about growth, not about enablement.

I certainly used to self-medicate with carbs. I used to literally numb everything and then go to sleep with the carb crash.
It works brilliantly for a lot of people. I don’t feel as well as on carnivore and it doesn’t matter how many carnivores tell me that if I would just eat carnivore, I’ll feel better. I’ve done that experiment and I don’t, and so there’s nothing trumps how you feel. And I just want to clarify that I don’t think this is a problem for everyone, but I definitely do think it is a potential problem because while I was losing weight, I was drinking the bulletproof coffee. And so it’s not everyone for sure, but I do think it’s important for people to realize that if they’re having issues, it’s something to think about because it can just be helpful to know what could be contributing to potential problems and then they can kind of figure it out and go from there.
That’s interesting because now that you’re saying that, I’m just thinking back to the fall when I was stress eating and eating a lot more carbohydrates, and I did notice that I did have a couple of migraines where I don’t think I’ve had like a really bad migraine in a couple of years. So that’s interesting that you say that it’s probably been a combination of the weight loss and being in ketosis that has really taken care of the migraines. And this is actually something I’ve talked about a lot with Dave because I had the same exact experience of trying to quit soda, trying to quit soda, trying to quit diet soda after I went keto, and it was like nothing would work. It was like this horrible addiction and I really didn’t like it. And so he went water only and I was like, okay, maybe that’ll work for me. And even though I didn’t keep the coffee out and stick with water only permanently, it did work to quit the diet soda, which I consider a huge win. And the funny thing for me is I don’t have the same addiction reaction to coffee. I don’t have the same addiction reaction to sparkling water or whatever.
It’s not a diet; it’s a way of eating it. Just as being a vegan is not a diet, it’s a way of eating. So is keto or low carb, or whatever, or being a carnivore, it’s a way of eating. Often too, when talking about keto, people will say it’s not sustainable. And it’s absolutely sustainable.

To be honest, I haven’t personally ever had anybody say that. I’m in a Facebook group for the people that have had surgery at the same hospital that I had, the same clinic, and a lot of people have said that they’ve had people that to them, and it’s really one of those things that I just kind of have to take it with a grain of salt. I tell people that’s how you should take it. Because you can’t know what it’s like to be a morbidly obese person unless you’ve walked a mile in their shoes any more than I could know what it’s like to be a person of another race, or another sexuality. Until you’ve walked a mile in that person’s shoes, you just can’t judge. And they come from a position of not being informed, not having the understanding. And it’s easy to say, oh, just let it go, because they don’t know.
I think the support group is key. It’s a wonderful community and I see a lot of people just really being able to be themselves and share themselves and know that there’s no stupid questions and nobody’s going to yell at them and they’re going to get all their questions answered. So I think the program is really, it’s for lots of people, but it gives a brilliant framework for someone just starting out, okay, here’s how you do it. Without spending months researching like Kim had to or trialing and erroring on recipes, spending a lot of money and time making things that don’t work and don’t taste delicious. But it’s also for people who have maybe got a bit off track or maybe they’ve had a hard moment in life and they need to get refocused. People who are experiencing a stall. So we have people from all of those categories. We have people who just want to get re-immersed in keto. We have people who are brand new. We have people who have stalled, we have people who have just got bored with what they were eating day in, day out, and they’ve come to get a refresh.

If they’re emotionally draining or they’re hard work or you can’t ask a question without being yelled at or made to feel dumb or you know, whatever, just don’t, there’s plenty of great groups out there. You don’t have to be in groups that are not there to really support you on your journey. There’s a lot of groups out there that will support you as long as you’re following their journey.

A great trick is the use of the normal glue under the tapes in a way that is narrow enough to not show left and right of the tapes but wide enough to cover the areas on top of the metal. With the glue as wide as the contact surface with the steel tube, the heat-sink-effect is seriously diminished and the tapes will work well even with the heatsink present etc. As the tapes themself so to speak do not require the normal oratex-glue underneath to adhere to a structure, the manuals emphasized on glue application as narrow enough so it would for sure not show glue on the surface at the edges. Glue application beyond the edge of the tape had been seen enough on planes and looks so bad, that in the manual all emphasis went into keeping that from being done. The glue application for the purpose of providing a barrier against the heat-sink for the tapes as such was not explained enough. The heat-sink-problem as such was explained in detail, especially on the phone as well, but the explanation of the positive heat-sink-barrier-effect of the manually applied Oratex glue was not in there! It for sure will be in the current editions. It was used by Roger and Frank and Larry and many others.

One more recent study also investigated the association between low-carbohydrate diets and mortality. The study titled ‘Lower carbohydrate diets and all-cause and cause-specific mortality: a population-based cohort study and pooling of prospective studies’ was published in the ‘European Heart Journal’ in Apr 2021. This study prospectively examined the relationship between low carbohydrate diets, all-cause death, and deaths from coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease (including stroke), and cancer in a nationally representative sample of 24825 participants of the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999-2021. Compared to participants with the highest carbohydrate consumption, those with the lowest intake had a 32% higher risk of all-cause death over an average 6/4-year follow-up. Besides, the risk of death from coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and cancer increased by 51%, 50% and 35% respectively. The highest adherence to a diet jointly lower in carbohydrate and higher in protein increases the risk of death from any cause by 21%, cancer death by 22%, coronary heart disease death by 44%, and cerebrovascular death by 41%. The risks of all-cause and cause-specific death over an average 6/4-year follow-up rose with each fall in carbohydrate intake and remained significant after adjusting for all available factors that might have influenced the association.

We’ve got a few big plans to do a double crossing next year. So that would be a pretty major achievement that I’d really love to tackle. We state the ‘kg + 50’ dosage guideline instead because of a great suggestion to optimize for helping the largest number of people the most - weight in kg + 50 easier and simpler to remember, and so may allow us to help more people, and with real MDMA, it’ll be a satisfying dose. I’m not a meth addict – are going to have to cop to, I’m an addict. And it’s a lot easier to say, oh, I’m an emotional eater, than I’m an addict. But sometimes you have to get a little bit hard with it. You have to look at the truth. And the truth is, is that you cannot control your eating. And even after you’ve had the surgery, you cannot control your eating because they’re not doing surgery on your brain. They’re doing surgery on your stomach. And at some point, even if I’ve had the surgery, my brain is still going to say to me, ooh, I want carbohydrates and therefore I’m going to eat carbohydrates.

And it was a brilliant swim, I had a great time. I had a tiny little bit too much long acting insulin on board, which I started to really wear in the last couple of hours of the race. So I did need to take some glucose on to counteract that. But again, first 14 k’s was a breeze. And then it’s not a failure, is it, if you’ve learnt from it. I think you’re right. I think getting specific about something forces you to really look at it and set those goals. Because it’s very different, isn’t it? Saying I want to lose weight, to saying I want to get into that pair of jeans that’s the next size down. And being specific about your goal makes you actually figure out and work out what is a realistic target, and what is a realistic timeframe for that.

After doing my research for this article (following my usual routine), I often check out articles already written on the subject, to see what approach others have taken. So I do tend to eat twice a day, like once in the morning and once in the evening. And it’s hard though, when you’re not hungry to make those calories count because you have to balance – again, eating enough so that you’re keeping your metabolism going. Or not eating anything, so you’re keeping your metabolism going. You don’t want to consistently eat only 600 or 700 calories, and then your metabolism slows down to account for the fact that you’re not eating enough. It’s kind of a tricky spot just to find the right combination that works for you for whatever your goals are. It depends f your goal is weight loss, or if your goal is metabolic healing, or if your goal is autophagy.

I have never seen Oratex and have no skin in this argument. What I know is we owners of fabric airplanes expect the fabric to last and look good for a long time usually 20 years or more.
