Vaibhav Suryavanshi, inspired by Shubman Gill, is aiming for a double century after his record-breaking innings in a Youth ODI match.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi etched his name in the record books by smashing the fastest century in Youth ODIs, achieving the feat in just 52 balls against England. Now, the young talent has set his sights on an even greater milestone: a double century, drawing inspiration from Shubman Gill's remarkable performances in Test cricket.

Record-Breaking Century

On July 5th, Suryavanshi broke the previous record of 53 balls held by Pakistan’s Kamran Ghulam. Playing in the fourth U19 ODI against England in Worcester, Vaibhav's explosive innings showcased his immense potential.

Inspiration from Shubman Gill

Following his record-breaking feat, the 14-year-old Vaibhav revealed his ambition to score a double century in the youth format. He stated that he drew inspiration from Shubman Gill, particularly after witnessing the Indian captain's batting prowess at Edgbaston. Gill's scores of 269 and 161 in the second Test against England served as a major source of motivation for the young cricketer.

"I did not know that I had broken the record. I got a lot of inspiration from Shubman Gill when he scored his 100 and 200. He kept at it and took it forward," said Vaibhav Suryavanshi after his century.

Vaibhav expressed a desire to bat for a longer duration, acknowledging that there were still 20 overs remaining in the match when he was dismissed. He felt he could have played an even longer innings, aiming to emulate Gill's resilience and determination.

Eyes on a Double Century

Vaibhav has now clearly stated his next ambition. "There is no celebration. I will just be happy that I was able to do well for the team. My next goal will be to hit 200 and play a full 50 overs," Vaibhav concluded.

To date, no one has scored a double century in Youth ODIs. The highest individual score remains at 191, achieved by Sri Lanka's Hasitha Boyagoda.

A Generational Talent

Vaibhav Suryavanshi is considered a generational talent, and his recent achievement is another feather in his cap. Earlier in the year, he became the youngest player to score a T20 century and the fastest Indian to reach a hundred in the IPL.

Representing Rajasthan Royals, he stunned audiences with a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans, earning widespread recognition.

Match Summary

On Friday, Suryavanshi opened the innings alongside captain Ayush Mhatre after England chose to bowl. Despite an early setback with Mhatre's dismissal, Suryavanshi remained composed and built on his confidence from a previous score of 86.

His innings of 143 runs from 78 balls, which included 13 boundaries and 10 sixes, propelled India to 234/2. This shifted the game's momentum in India's favour.

Vaibhav also recorded the second-fastest century in Men’s Youth Tests last year, scoring a 56-ball hundred against Australia U19 in Chennai.
