Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, has voiced his support for the Indian lower order despite their batting collapses in the recent Test match at Headingley. This statement comes after India suffered a disappointing defeat against England, losing by 371 runs on the final day.
India's batting lineup faltered twice in the match, leading to their downfall. The team lost 7 wickets for 41 runs in the first innings and 6 for 31 in the second, squandering opportunities to seize control of the game.
Despite Rishabh Pant's impressive performance with a century in each innings and a total of 835 runs scored by the team, India couldn't prevent the defeat.
Shubman Gill, who marked his captaincy debut with a century in the first innings, mentioned that the team aimed for a target of around 435 runs. However, Gambhir believes the game's momentum shifted earlier, suggesting that a first-innings score of 570-580 would have allowed India to dominate.
Addressing the performance of the lower order, Gambhir defended their efforts, stating, "Look, first of all, it's not that they weren't applying themselves. Sometimes people fail. And that's okay." He acknowledged their disappointment, emphasizing that they were working hard and that even established batsmen experience failures.
Gambhir expressed hope that the lower order would learn from their mistakes and deliver better performances in the future, but he also clarified that their batting performance was not the sole reason for the Test match loss.
Another significant factor contributing to India's defeat was their subpar catching performance. The team dropped seven catches throughout the game, with Yashasvi Jaiswal being a repeat offender. One costly drop involved Ben Duckett, who was reprieved on 97 and went on to score a crucial 149.
Gill admitted that the dropped catches were a concern and something the team needed to address. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the Headingley pitch but stressed the need for improved standards.
Despite acknowledging the team's youth, Gambhir dismissed it as an excuse for the loss. He asserted that representing India comes with the responsibility of striving to win every game, regardless of the team's experience level.
Furthermore, Gambhir confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah would participate in only two more Test matches as part of a pre-series workload management plan. The decision on which two matches Bumrah would play was yet to be determined.
Gambhir expressed confidence in the team's bowling attack, even without Bumrah, emphasizing that the squad was selected based on trust and belief in their abilities. He acknowledged the bowlers' inexperience but expressed optimism about their continued improvement. He highlighted that India was in a potentially winning position for the majority of the Test match, demonstrating the team's capabilities.
