India began their preparations for the Asia Cup 2025 with their first training session on Friday, with head coach Gautam Gambhir delivering an inspiring message to the squad ahead of the continental showpiece in the UAE. The tournament begins on September 9, with India aiming to add another major title to their cabinet after last year’s T20 World Cup triumph.
All-rounder Shivam Dube, who played a key role in India’s 2024 World Cup win, revealed the words of encouragement Gambhir shared with the squad.
“Whenever you play for your country, you have the opportunity to do something new. So it was about making use of that training and trying to become a better cricketer,” Dube said in a video posted by the BCCI on social media.
Dube, who adds balance to the side with his middle-order hitting and handy seam bowling, will be eager to secure a spot in the playing XI and continue his upward trajectory under Gambhir’s guidance.
India’s squad also sees the return of Shubman Gill to the T20I setup. The stylish opener has been appointed vice-captain, a sign that he could be groomed as India’s next all-format leader. Gill expressed his excitement about rejoining the side and contributing to their Asia Cup push.
“Very excited obviously. I think it’s a great group and the way we’ve been playing T20s has been nothing short of entertaining. So excited to join the group,” Gill said.
India face a challenging group stage, opening their campaign against hosts UAE on September 10. The marquee clash against arch-rivals Pakistan follows on September 14, before they round off their group fixtures against Oman on September 19. The playoffs are scheduled to begin the next day, September 20.
With Gambhir’s message of fresh opportunities resonating across the squad, the Men in Blue enter the tournament looking to carry forward their recent momentum and underline their dominance in Asian cricket.
